Veterinary sector has post-pandemic hiring challenges


Axios reports on the ongoing veterinary industry staffing shortage nationwide that has been aggravated by the post-pandemic pet adoption boom. American Pet Products Association data suggests that two in three U.S. households own a pet. Susan Sayles, the owner of Brooklyn Road Veterinary Clinic in Jackson, MI, says at the height of Covid, and even afterwards, staff at veterinary clinics, including support staff like vet techs and receptionists, saw "emotional, frustrated and even aggressive" clients, which led some people to leave the profession. Sayles, who is a former Michigan Veterinary Medical Association president, notes that hiring for support staff positions remains a particular challenge.
